Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche

Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche - Haruki Murakami, Alfred Birnbaum, Philip Gabriel Underground is a fascinating, insightful look at survivors' stories of the sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway system in the mid-1990s. I was surprised at the passive attitude that many survivors and former cult members had toward the perpetrators in comparison with that of the survivors of the 9/11 attacks (or at least what I've seen and heard). Murakami also gives an inside look at the Aum Shinrikyo cult and attempts to shed light on the motivation for the attack and the history of the group. Many years later, I still think about this book every day when I board the bus and choose a seat.
