Buffalo Lockjaw

Buffalo Lockjaw - Greg Ames Three and a half stars - I've gone back and forth several times while writing this review!I almost put this book down after the first chapter or two because I didn't want to read a story focused on Alzheimer's and all of its excruciating details. Fortunately the narrative quickly turns to the protagonist's own struggles (with alcohol, insecurity, and family dynamics) within the context of his mother's illness. The city of Buffalo, its residents, and the weather provide a well-wrought backdrop for a rebelious son's return for a last Thanksgiving with the family. The novel is threaded with segments from his oral history of Buffalo, adding just enough humor to balance out the heavier topics.
